Mapping industrial lobbying strategies on the European PFAS restriction proposal
PFAS has been a known issue since the early 2000s, so why hasn’t it been dealt with? These forever chemicals are everywhere in our natural and man-made environment, oftentimes ending up in water as its final sink. However, it is a complex issue to tackle due to its beneficial uses in many applications and its broad chemical class. To understand one of the multifacets of this problem, this project analyzed the 5000 plus comments made on the 2023 proposed PFAS restriction submitted to the European Chemical Agency (ECHA). This was the largest consultation response in history, with industry stakeholders forming the majority of these commenters. A manual and AI analysis revealed that 71% of industry were explicitly opposed with 78% of these opponents requesting technical exemptions. Common arguments included lack of suitable alternatives, economic and societal impacts of a PFAS restriction and low toxicity for certain chemicals. To draw comparisons in industry behaviour across multiple sections, a broader historical context in similar cases such as tobacco and pesticide DDT was applied. Many of the same arguments against a ban of those substances were very similar to the arguments used for PFAS. This exposes the larger problematic patterns of industry influence, where the debate focus tends to be shifted from health to technical arguments like essentiality. Overall, this study highlighted how stakeholder narratives can influence environmental decision-making and demonstrated how combining traditional research methods with AI-based analysis can help identify patterns of argumentation in complex regulatory debates.

PLACEHOLDER — a second project
PLACEHOLDER, and the template for a new entry. Replace this with the plain-language description the researchers submitted — roughly 200 words, no jargon, understandable by anyone who has never read a paper. It is the only description a card shows, and the overview the project page opens with. Every field below it is optional except the labels: a project with nothing but a summary and a name still renders as a finished page.
